In 1849, Dr. Josiah Fort posted a sign on his headright that read "Texarkana." That name signifies the unique history of the community, for Texarkana is a city owned in reality by two states and named for three. Texarkana's heritage begins with the natural beauty of the Sulphur and Red Rivers where the Caddo Indians tilled their fields. Early pioneers found the fertile land and flowing rivers desirable for agriculture, and settlements soon arose throughout the area. Though the boundary lines of Texarkana were disputed by many countries and individuals, in the naming of the town all were in accord. The railroads, stretching their steel ribbons across the wilderness, opened Texarkana as a natural gateway between St. Louis and Dallas. And with the railroads came commerce and growth. The story of Texarkana continues with its history. Born here was Scott Joplin, classical ragtime composer whose works influenced the development of 20th century music. Much has happened in Texarkana since its name was coined nearly a century and a half ago. A good deal of it was recorded in photographs.
