Prima edizione Copia autografata
First edition. Fairly early issue ofThe Lyric, which according to the publisher is "the oldest magazine in North America in continuous publication devoted to traditional poetry." The magazine was founded in 1921 and is still in publication. Virginia Poet Laureate and lawyer, Leigh Hanes took over publication in 1929. This copy contains a letter from Hanes to Texas poet and librarian, Siddie Joe Johnson who won several awards including the first Grolier Award for contributions to children's library work in 1954. Johnson has contributed a poem to this issue called "Waiting," which Hanes praises in the letter along with bemoaning his lack of time for editing due to his day job of legal work: ".how I get it out at all is a miracle to me. It seems to have a certain momentum of its own -- poets hold back until about the end of each season, and then they come in rushing, hundreds upon hundreds. and when the time comes to publish I lock myself away from the world and the law and let THE LYRIC really rule." . 21x14cm, [12]pp. Laid in is 2 pg typed letter, signed on Lyric stationary from editor, Leigh Hanes to Siddie Joe Johnson. Original, printed brown wrappers, yapped edges. Small tear to bottom edge and some marginal wrinkling else near fine. Letter folded down the middle with a few holograph corrections.
