Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. In the 1920s Prohibition was the law, but ignoring it was the norm, especially in New Orleans. While popular writers such as F. Scott Fitzgerald invented partygoers who danced from one cocktail to the next, real denizens of the French Quarter imbibed their way across the city. Bringing to life the fiction of flappers with tastes beyond bathtub gin, Shaking Up Prohibition in New Orleans: Authentic Vintage Cocktails from A to Z serves up recipes from the era of the speakeasy. Originally assembled by Olive Leonhardt and Hilda Phelps Hammond around 1929, this delightful compendium applauds the city's irrepressible love for cocktails in the format of a classic alphabet book. Leonhardt, a noted artist, illustrated each letter of the alphabet, while Hammond provided cocktail recipes alongside tongue-in-cheek poems that jab at the dubious scenario of a ""dry"" New Orleans. A cultural snapshot of the Crescent City's resistance to Prohibition, this satirical, richly illustrated book brings to life the spirit and spirits of a jazz city in the Jazz Age. With an introduction on Prohibition-era New Orleans by historian John Magill and biographical profiles of Leonhardt and Hammond by editor Gay Leonhardt, readers can fully appreciate the setting and the personalities behind this vintage cocktail guide with a Big Easy bent. A perfect gift for lovers (and makers) of craft cocktails, arbiters of style, and celebrants of the Crescent City, Shaking Up Prohibition in New Orleans captures the essence of the Roaring Twenties. Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Covers by Olive Leonhardt (illustratore). Revised Edition. First published in 1933, this is a sixteenth revised edition of 1960. Some slight edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of soft covers and spine, some faint splashing to page fore edges and endpapers (coffee? sauce?), corners very slightly rubbed, no published price, no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 169pp, illustrated. The New Orleans cookbook features recipes by many notable chefs of the era, from drinks and appetizers to seafood, sauces, meats, eggs, and (of course) desserts. It was compiled from the recipes of famous chefs of the region and time. I particularly liked the recipe for sambals (delicious!). Quite a scarce book.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Good or Better. Cover art by Olive Leonhardt (illustratore). First Edition. Cover title. From the introduction / dedication "Dear Mandys. They are integrally of our life, part of its suavity. They trick us, harass us and serve us; understand us amazingly, and love us. And we, we scold them, distrust them, rely on them, take care of them, love them. Wanting a more worthy token, I offer them this little tribute, with, fittingly, echoes of their homely wisdom and reflections of their homely but true art." Original printed card wraps with cover art by Southern artist, Olive Leonhardt, 8vo size (9 inches tall), pp. [1-6], 7-61. Covers toned and stained with modest wear, hinges cracked, one leaf w. a 1 inch closed tear at top edge, text with occasional stains, but mostly clean throughout. "Natalie Vivian Scott was once described by author Sherwood Anderson as "the best newspaperwoman in America." She became a vital force in the creative salon of intellectuals who gathered in the French Quarter during the 1920s. This was a time that saw the reawakening of this original section of New Orleans life, thanks to the efforts of Scott and her colleagues. as a Red Cross nurse and translator during World War's I and II, Scott was awarded the Croix de Guerre, France's highest medal for bravery. She received this medal after rescuing patients from the continuously bombed and debris-filled upper floors of the medical building she worked in."
