ABOUT THE AUTHORS: J. Macionis (pronounced ma-SHOW-nis) grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received his bachelor's degree from Cornell University and his doctorate in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. His publications are wide-ranging, focusing on community life in the United States, interpersonal intimacy in families, effective teaching, humour, and the importance of global education. He and Nijole V. Benokraitis have edited the fourth edition of Seeing Ourselves: Classic, Contemporary, and Cross-Cultural Readings in Sociology. John also has written a brief version of this book, Society: The Basics. In addition, he is co-author of a new urban studies text, Cities and Urban Life. John Macionis is professor of sociology at Kenyon College. During his twenty-year career at Kenyon, he has served as chair of the Anthropology-Sociology Department, director of the college's multidisciplinary program in humane studies, and presided over the college's faculty. He has also been active in academic programs in other countries, having travelled to some fifty nations. In the fall of 1994, he directed the global education course for the University of Pittsburgh's Semester at Sea program, teaching 400 students on a floating campus that visited twelve countries as it circled the globe. At Kenyon, Macionis offers a wide range of upper-level courses, but his favorite course is Introduction to Sociology, which he schedules every semester. The Macionis family - John, Amy, and children McLean and Whitney - live on a farm in rural Ohio. Linda M. Gerber has spent most of her life in or near Toronto. Her first degree was in nursing, then she turned her attention to graduate studies in sociology. While still a graduate student, she became involved as a consultant in highway planning doing socio-economic impact assessment. After completing her master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Toronto, she spent three years as a research associate at Harvard's Center for Population Studies before joining the faculty in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Guelph. Professor Gerber's research has focused upon Canada's Native peoples, Canadian politics and ethnicity, but she has a broader interest in Canadian society (its demographic processes, its identity, and it fragility). Her publications are in the areas of Native studies, voting behaviour, gerontology, ethnic relations and Quebec separatism. While she has taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses over the years, she continues to teach one introductory sociology course each year. EXCERPT: . . . As in the past, this third Canadian edition of Sociology is authoritative, comprehensive, stimulating, and - as e-mail messages from students across the country testify - plain fun to read. This thoroughly updated edition elevates sociology's most popular text to a still higher standard of excellence, and offers an unparalleled resource to today's students as they learn about both our diverse society and the changing world. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
