Libro Prima edizione
Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. Cedric Wright, Philip Hyde, David Simmons, Lee Talbot (illustratore). 1st Edition. Fine, as noted; see description and scans. San Francisco: The Sierra Club, 1957. The June, 1957 issue of The Sierra Club Bulletin, that being Volume 42, Number 6. Octavo, glosst perfect-bound wraps, 92 pp. Fine, as originally received, though as-originally-received in this specific case did include tiny micro wear at the top edge, front cover - barely visible in that scan, which see. Otherwise, flawless. Extraordinarily handsome example. Cover photo, by Cedric Wright, is of the John Muir Trail in the High Sierra; the theme of the issue - Wildlife in Our Civilization - was that of the Fifth Biennial Wildlife Conference, from which most of this issue's content was taken. The SC doing its environmental activism early and often, as it always has, so much better than so many others. There is no "civilization" in the normal sense within, of course; just gorgeous photos by masters like Wright, Philip Hyde, David Simmons and Lee Talbot, with memorable accompanying text (see scan of contents page for details) by those gentlemen as well as David R. Brower, A. Starker Leopold, Lowell Sumner, William Bridge Cook, Don M. Wilson and of course editor August Frugé, on topics including the Northern Cascades, Beavers, Wilderness Fung, Spider Rock and much else. The photography is, of course, a very impressive tour de force by the mentioned foursome. Please see scans. LSC2.

THe results were so moving and impressive that Wolfe had 2,000 copies printed at his own expense, while all the profits from Doubleday's edition went directly to the men ; "We cannot state too emphatically that this books is presented not as a literary effort but as a series of social documents."--foreword ; "If a foreigner should ask me what Americans were like in 1946, I would hand him this book.
