4to. 1½ pp. on bifolium. With autograph address and traces of seal. To the mayor of Pantin, François Joseph Gorneau, announcing a reduction of his annual donation to the parish priest of Pantin. Méhul gives a detailed account of his financial losses in the wake of the Bourbon Restoration to explain why he is unable to keep a promise made in better times: "À l époque ou je me suis engagé a donner tout les ans vingt francs pour le curé de Pantin, ma position étoit bien différente de la qu elle est maintenant. - Dubbed the "composer of the Revolution", Méhul celebrated his biggest successes during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era. In 1794 he composed the "Chant du départ", which was later selected as the official anthem of the First Empire. Méhul's "Chant national du 14 Juillet 1800", comissioned by Napoleon to celebrate his victory in the Battle of Marengo, almost reached the status of a national hymn. He composed more than forty operas, of which "Joseph" (1807), a tribute to Napoleon's campaign in Egypt and to his first wife Joséphine de Beauharnais, is still performed today. Despite his friendship with Napoleon, Méhul suffered no political repercussions in the transition to the Bourbon Restoration, and his public standing survived intact. Nevertheless, he suffered financial losses as detailed in the letter, and soon died from tuberculosis. - Well preserved.
