'An Italian language scientific study, dedicated to the collection of Saint Paul, one of the most prestigious epigraphic collections of Rome. It ideally continues the publication entitled Indice della raccolta epigrafica di San Paolo fuori le mura dated 1998 edited by Giorgio Filippi, intergrated by further analysis and updates. Fruit of the collaboration between the Fathers of the venerable Basilica, the Vatican Museums and the University of Tuscia, this book is part of new ventures aimed to enhance the documents present in the Cloister and the Lapidary of Saint Paul. Transcripts derived from the second volume of ICVR (Inscriptiones Christianae Vrbis Romae saeptimo saeculo antiquiores. Nova series) edited by the famous epigraphist Angelo Silvagni and unpublished epigraphs on stone have been examined. The survey has led to new identifications, interpretations and additions. A following autoptical revision on original texts led to other editions producing the index of terms. The collection of 1338 inscriptions is divided in Greek and Latin general indices. Each of them is divided into different sections organising the terms by alphabetical order, forms, acephalous forms, numbers, acephalous numerals, abnormal numerals, Christian symbols and figurative elements. An essential series of illustrations in black and white closes the volume.'.

'A tiny notebook, containing approximately 1,700 inscriptions transcribed by Cornelio Margarini an eminent scholar of the Benedictine order of the 17th century is the subject of a study previously unheard-of in other editions of epigraphic codes, proposed in this volume in Italian only. The manuscript code is currently preserved in the historical Archive of the Monastery of the ancient Basilica of Saint Paul outside the walls, that has recently undergone important archaeological investigations. The texts have been reassembled thanks to a multidisciplinary research and a synergy between classical methods of decoding and advanced technologies. Although most original epigraphs have been lost, the transcriptions of Margarini have enabled a reconstruction and identification of more than half. An introduction including the biography of the author, the history of the code and the Basilica of Saint Paul is followed by the analysis of the manuscript that reveals the amazing graphic skill of the author, but also his profound affection for this sacred building. The several stages of the study of the code, up to the revisions that led to its final consolidation, are accurately described. The unpublished inscriptions have considerably broadened the historical, social, ethnic, economic, political, religious and linguistic knowledge about imperial Rome. The volume closes with an anastatic copy of the code, with colour plates illustrating the single pages of the notebook.'.
