Abbracciò la carriera militare combattendo sotto le bandiere spagnole in Fiandra e in Piemonte (assedio di Verrua); protetto dall'Olivares, entrò poi nel Consiglio di Stato, fu ambasciatore a Londra nel 1640 e dal 1643 storiografo del regno. Dopo la caduta dell'Olivares rientrò a Bologna e fu senatore. Le sue opere furono tradotte in varie lingue e furono elogiate da Baltasar Graciàn y Morales.
