Libro Prima edizione
Original Wraps. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Jacket, as Issued. First UK Paperback Edition. Second printing of the first UK paperback edition, published in a new format in the Penguin International Poets series, and published in 1986. The book was first published in Penguin paperbacks in the smaller format Penguin Modern European Poets series in 1977, and originally in hardback by OUP in 1973. With an Introduction by the joint translator Clarence Brown. ***Near fine in colour illustrated glossy card covers, with the printed price of £2.95 on the back cover. The covers have some light edge wear and rubbing commensurate with age and handling, but there are no significant creases or tears. The covers are bright and clean. The spine is unfaded and clean, with no reading creases. Page block edges clean. Internally also near fine, with no inscriptions or annotations. Paper stock lightly tanned but pages clean. Spine tight. ***200mm x 130mm. 139 pages, including a section of Index of Titles and First Lines plus three pages of publisher's adverts at the back of the book. ***'Osip Mandelstam, born in 1891, was one of the great Russian poets who, like his friends Pasternak and Akhmatova, bore witness to the plight of Russia under Stalin. Fore this he paid with his life, dying in the winter of 1938 on his way to a Siberian labour camp. Apart from his genius, the first miracle of Mandelstam's poetry - suppressed in Russia for some 40 years - is that it has survived. Though the poems reflect his life and its horror, they are by no means all of them grim. In his introduction Clarence Brown describes the "incorrigible delight" which Mandelstam took ij his art. His commitment to poetry was total, and he felt acutely that his gift imposed upon him an obligation.: the people, he believed, need poetry no less than bread.' (Quote taken from the back cover) ***A second printing of the first paperback edition of this translation, in very nice near fine condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
