Auffällig ist, daß die Korrespondenten fast alle deutlich jünger sind als Darwin. Das durchschnittliche Geburtsjahr der Individuen, die einen umfangreicheren Briefwechsel mit Darwin hatten (fünf oder mehr Briefe), ist ] 830; sie sind also ungefähr eine Generation (20 Jahre) jünger als Darwin, der 1809 geboren wurde. Älter oder im gleichen Alter wie Darwin sind aus dieser Gruppe lediglich Heinrich Georg Bronn (*1800), Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg (* 1795) und Oswald Heer (*1809).
