Editore: Hunter and Prentis. Petersburg, 1788
Da: Riverby Books, Fredericksburg, VA, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Debates and other Proceedings of the Convention of Virginia, convened at Richmond, on Monday the 2d day of June 1788 for the purpose of deliberating on the Constitution recommended by the Grand Federal Convention. To which is prefixed the Federal Constitution. 3 volumes bound in 1. Volume 1 printed in 1788 by Hunter and Prentis. (Petersburg) Volume 2 printed in 1789 by William Prentis. (Petersburg) Volume 3 printed in 1789 by William Prentis. (Petersburg) Full leather. This is an early binding, perhaps 18th century. Maroon leather label on the spine says simply 'Debates.' There is wear to the hinges, scuffing to the boards and some chipping to the foot of the spine. Binding is tight. After the title page in volume 1, the first page present is page 7/8. The next page is page 15. In all, there are 5 leaves missing, comprising the printing of the Constitution itself, which prefaced the entire volume. (the missing leaves are provided separately, in facsimile). The debates themselves begin on page 17. The title page and first 2 leaves of volume 3 are loose and slightly sprung, resulting in tattered outer margin. The title page of the third volume has a very old repair to the upper corner affecting a few letters of the title, some of which have been written in on the repair by hand. There is some mild foxing, but overall quite good condition. A few page numbers in the first volume are rubbed out, sometimes resulting in a small hole in the page, never affecting any text except for the page number itself. There is a piece missing from the margin of page 23/24, not affecting text. Each volume has its own title page. Volume 1 has 194 pages. Volume 2 has 195 pages. Volume 3 has 228 pages. By the summer of 1788, eight states had already approved the Federal Constitution. One more was needed (three quarters of the colonies) for ratification of the document. Virginia, New York and New Hampshire took the matter up for debate in June. Of those three states, New York appeared to be firmly opposed to the Constitution. New Hampshire and Virginia were evenly divided. Virginia's delegates assembled on June 2, 1788 to begin the debate. The assembly included two representatives from each of Virginia's 84 counties. Among them were James Madison, John Marshall, Patrick Henry, George Mason, James Monroe and several others from among the first rank of founders. The debate was bitter and lengthy. Three weeks into the proceedings, unbeknownst to the Virginia delegates, New Hampshire delegates met and ratified the Constitution in only 3 days of debate. The New Hampshire ratification meant that approval of the whole document did not hang solely on Virginia's debate but the Virginia debate remained crucial to the young country -- In 1788, Virginia was the most populous state, larger than the six smallest colonies combined. Without support from Virginia, the Constitution and the Federalist government it represented would be drastically weakened. The published account of the Virginia debate stands among the most important records of the Constitutions Convention and formation of the Federal Government. It was published before North Carolina and Rhode Island even held their ratification conventions. This is a wonderfully well-preserved copy with an interesting Virginia association. There is a bookplate on the inside front over with the name 'Theo. Hansford, King George.' The name 'Theo Hansford' is signed at the top of the title pages of volumes 1 and 2, partially trimmed. Front endpaper has the name 'A. Hansford' signed on it. The bookplate belongs to Theodosius Hansford of King George, Virginia. He was born in 1768; died in 1824 or 1825. He served as clerk of the senate from 1800 until his death. His son Addison Hansford took over the post and served until 1849. (please email for photos and the rest of the description).
