Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. xxxi, 838 pp; illus. Original cloth. Near Fine, in dust jacket. This copy does NOT have any library markings. First Edition. COPY OF NOBEL LAUREATE EDWARD PURCELL. The copy does not have any ownership marking of Edward Purcell, but it comes with three Typed Letters, Signed, to Purcell (see photos) from (1) author James E. Mattson (November 7, 1995), (2) author Merrill Simon (September 18, 1995), and (3) Nobel Laureate Paul C. Lauterbur (May 11, 1995). In his letter to Purcell, Lauterbur states he does not wish to participate in the project and has asked the authors that he not be profiled in the book. Why? Because he sees the project as a "public relations exercise on behalf of Dr. Damadian". Obviously Lauterbur changed his mind, as he is profiled in the book. After Lauterbur was awarded the Nobel prize in 2003, Raymond Damadian paid for full-page advertisements in major newspaper such as the New York Times, asserting that he, too, should have been awarded the Nobel prize. This book was published seven years before that Nobel prize, but the controversy between Damadian and Lauterbur over credit for MRI had been going on long before the Nobel prize, and that controversy is discussed in this book. Edward Purcell and Felix Bloch were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1952 "for their development of new methods for nuclear magnetic precision measurements and discoveries in connection therewith." Paul C. Lauterbur and Sir Peter Mansfield were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2003 "for their discoveries concerning magnetic resonance imaging." Purcell is the subject of chapter 3 (pp. 170-260), "Edward M. Purcell, Discoverer of NMR Signal in Condensed Matter by Observing Energy Absportion." Lauterbur is the subject of chapter 9 (pp. 698-733), "Paul C. Lauterbur, Originator of a Method for Spatially Localizing NMR Relaxation Information from a Sample and Displaying It as a Pictorial Map." Also Offered with: Brochure for the book (see photo).
