Aggiungi al carrellopaperback. Condizione: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good+. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good dj. Illustrated by (frontispiece) John Newton Howitt (illustratore). First Edition. [a good sound copy with modest wear to the extremities, slight damage to upper corners of two pages at the beginning of Chapter XV; the jacket is heavily edgeworn and a bit tattered along the bottom edge, with a number of small chips and bits of paper loss at various points along the edges, and some fading to the spine]. (B&W frontispiece) This "novel of New York Society" (oh yes, capital S) concerns a woman named Nita Wynn, to whom "life was one long period of disillusion from the time she discerned the real character of her idealized lover, and saw her father marry a woman quite outside Nita's scope of comprehension, until the years had brought her understanding and taught her the lesson of tolerance. Domestic infelicities in New York society contributed not a little to Nita's evolution; a business life gave her the necessary contact with realities, and an undaunted courage and fineness of spirit brought her finally to the height of her own joy." (Nita ages from 20 to 31 over the course of the novel; her "business life," made necessary when her father dies and leaves her a relative pittance to live on, bequeathing most of his money to his gold-digging second wife, involves working her way up from a freelance designer of dinner cards to a successful career as a decorator.) The author, who was better known later in life as a book critic and lecturer, wrote four novels between 1907 and 1923, of which this was the third. One contemporary reviewer (who is rather disdainful of the whole "New York Society" genre -- "Who cares much about it, one way or another?") notes that the author "makes free use of the divorce courts, [and] employs the sinking of the Lusitania to get rid of a couple of superfluous characters.".
