Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD). Fans of the actor Walter Hampden, pay heed. This book was once his and was signed and inscribed to him by the author. The inscription on the front end paper reads: 'To Walter Hampden, Esquire, with much admiration of his surpassing artistry. Sincerely, Charles Hardy Meigs, Forest Hills, Long Island New York, N. Y. October the first, 1935.' (this fellow is even more compulsive than I). And down a ways on the same page the author wrote 'I marvel at your art.' --Job, page 148.' Mr. Meigs is quoting one of his characters from page 148. I probably shouldn't be selling this book as Walter Hampden died on the day I was born, so it's possible I am Walter Hampden and this was my book in my previous lifetime. But, a sale is a sale. You can see the blue covers in the photos. They have only light soiling, that thin white line on the front and a little white spot off the bottom edge of the rear. There is wear at the top and bottom edges of the spine, a little rubbing/fraying, a tiny bit of loss. The spine is a little toned, darker than the bright blue of the front and rear. The cover edges are in solid shape, the bottom two have just of little bit of white showing under the blue. The corners have tiny bit of rubbing, the front bottom one has a little more. The two top corners have tiny creases just below their tips. The page edges look good. The middle and bottom ones are deckled or rough-cut. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. Excellent binding. There is some spotting/foxing on the inside covers and end papers (you can see that in the photo of the signed page). There are a handful of such spots on the half-title page and one at the top corner of the title page and its verso, and the next page. After that it's clear sailing until you get to page 48 where for some reason that same amber spot shows up at the top corner and can be seen there through page 65. I didn't see any other conspicuous spotting in any other place on those pages. And after that it really does appear to be clear sailing with regard to spotting all the way through to the end of the book. The pages are very clean. I'm not finding any soiling (I'm regarding the amber spot as a bit of foxing). The rough-cut edges are in very good shape. There is one exception, which is actually the last page of the book (prior to the Index). There is a fairly thin jagged loss over the top half of that page's outer edge. However, it's far from the print. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. There are no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. However, there is a vague crease or semi-crease below the top corners of a large number of pages, the kind of crease or crinkle that forms typically from a bump to the covers. Finally, the signed inscription to my former self represents the only writing to be found anywhere in the book. Inscribed by Author(s).
