Original Wraps. 4to. 225 pages. 25 x 29 cm. First edition. Catalog accompanying an exhibition held at the Museum of Biblical Art, June 5-Sept. 27, 2009 and at the Michael C. Carlos Museum, Emory University, Oct. 17, 2009-Jan. 24, 2010. "This scholarly publication accompanies the exhibition Scripture for the Eyes, focusing attention on the extraordinarily rich array of biblical prints produced in the Low Countries (comprising today's Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg) during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, a time of dynamic and sometimes violent religious and political change. In particular, the book studies the crucial role played by scriptural prints in the complex processes of religious self-formation that dominated early modern European culture. Following early modern usage, the prints - woodcuts, engravings, and etchings by such artists as Lucas van Leyden, Jan Swart van Groningen, Maarten van Heemskerck, Philips Galle, Hendrick Goltzius, and Hieronymus Wierix, among others - are classed into five functional groups: Sacred History and Geography, Exegesis, Worship, Morality, and Politics and Polemics. In addition to a preface by James Clifton and the main interpretative essay by Walter Mellon, the volume also contains an extensive bibliography. " (Publishers Description) . Subjects: Prints, Dutch - 16th century - Exhibitions. Prints, Belgian - 16th century - Exhibitions. Illustration - Bible - Pays-Bas - 16e s. Bible - Illustrations - Exhibitions. Edges bumped, light wear to wraps, otherwise fresh. Good condition. (ART-22-22).

24 x 16 cm, XXXII, 483 pp, 161 illustrations in b/w + 12 colour ill. Hard cover. The articles within this volume explore some of the diverse medieval constructions and representations of the soul. One of the central and defining beliefs in late-medieval and early-modern spirituality was the notion of the formability of the religious self. Identified with the soul, the self was conceived, indeed experienced, not as an abstraction, but rather as an essential spiritual persona, as well as the intellectual and sensory center of a human being. This volume investigates the role played by images construed as formal and semantic variables - mental images, visual tropes and figures, pictorial and textual representations - in generating and sustaining processes of meditation that led the viewer or reader from outward perception to various forms of inward perception and spiritual discernment. The fifteen articles address the history of the soul as a cultural construct, an internal locus of self-formation where the divine is seen to dwell and the person may experience her/himself as a place inhabited by the spirit of God. Three central questions are approached from various disciplines: first, how was the self-contained soul created in God's likeness, yet stained by sin and as such susceptible both to destructive and redemptive forces, refashioned as a porous and malleable entity susceptible to metaphysical effects and human practices, such as self-investigation, meditative prayer, and other techniques of inwardness? Second, how did such practices constitutive of an inner liturgy prepare the soul - the anima, bride - for an encounter with God that trains, purifies, moulds, shapes, and transforms the religious self? Finally, in this process of self-reformation, how were images of place and space mobilized, how were loci found, and how did the soul come to see itself situated within these places mapped upon itself?.

Hardcover 272 pages english. ISBN 9789004179745. In bringing together work on optic theory, ethnography, and the visual cultures of Christianity, this volume offers a sense of the richness and the complexity of early modern thinking about the human eye. The seven case studies explore the relationship between vision and knowledge, taking up such diverse artifacts as an emblem book, a Jesuit mariological text, Calvin's Institutes, Las Casas's Apologia, Hans Staden's True History, the Codex Telleriano-Remensis, and an exegetical painting by Herri met de Bles. Argued from different disciplinary perspectives, these essays pose crucial questions about the eyes, asking how they were construed as instruments of witnessing, perception, representation, cognition, and religious belief. Contributors include: Tom Conley, Walter Melion, Jose Rabasa, Lee Palmer Wandel, Michel Weemans, Nicolas Wey Gomez, and Neil Whitehead. 0 g.

Leiden & Boston, Brill, [2002]. XXXIX,844 pp. Col. & b./w. ills. Orig. hardcover (boards). 8vo. (Intersections, Vol. 79). [ISBN: 978-90-04-10997-1]. - As new.In epideictic oratory, ekphrasis is typically identified as an advanced rhetorical exercise that verbally reproduces the experience of viewing a person, place, or thing; more specifically, it often purports to replicate the experience of viewing a work of art. Not only what was seen, but also how it was beheld, and the emotions attendant upon first viewing it, are implicitly construed as recoverable, indeed reproducible. This volume examines how and why many early modern pictures operate in an ekphrastic mode: such pictures claim to reconstitute works of art that solely survived in the textual form of an ekphrasis; or they invite the beholder to respond to a picture in the way s/he responds to a stirring verbal image; or they call attention to their status as an image, in the way that ekphrasis, as a rhetorical figure, makes one conscious of the process of image-making; or finally, they foreground the artist s or the viewer s agency, in the way that the rhetor or auditor is adduced as agent of the image being verbally produced. - Contributors: Carol Elaine Barbour, Ivana Bicak, Letha Ch ien, James Clifton, et al. - Publisher's retail price: 244,16.
