See her biography in MANTLE FIELDING'S DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN PAINTERS, SCULPTORS, ENGRAVERS (p. 851, 1983 edition, updated by Glenn B. Opitz). Shirk graduated from Carnegie Library School and earned her master's degree in fine arts at the University of Pittsburgh. Her thesis was Picture Windows: Children's Book Illustrations.
