Most of the poems are based on Indian legends; titles include "A Tapéra da Lua," "A lenda das Pedras Verdes," "As Uyáras," and "A Endemoninhada." On pp. 105-16, under the heading "Les légends des Indiens," are printed two short essays by E. Deleau that first appeared in the Messager du Brésil, 1882.Alexandre José de Mello Moraes Filho (b. Bahia, 1843) studied in Rio de Janeiro with the intention of entering the Church, but decided instead to study medicine, receiving his degree from the University of Brussels.
