"For the Press" stamp on the front cover, outer bifolia separated along the bottom half of the fold, and bumping to the corners, a complete but just a good or better copy. For voice and piano (with pedal marks). Plate imprint, "A.P.S. 5899-5." The lyrics are from the play *Orpheus: A Masque* by Annie Fields. The composer of this piece, Margaret Ruthven Lang, was an American composer born and based out of Boston. In *Women & Music: A History," Karin Pendle says that Lang was the first woman composer to have a piece performed by a major American orchestra; the piece was her now lost *Dramatic Overture: Op. 10*, performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1893. *OCLC* locates only a single holding of this song and it appears to be equally uncommon in the trade.

Annie Fields, who at the time of publication was in her second decade of widowhood, had been devastated by the loss of her husband, and withdrew from society, though she eventually developed a close companionship with Maine author Sarah Orne Jewett. This volume is divided into three essays: "Leigh Hunt," "Edinburgh," and "From Milton to Thackeray." Clearly a well-educated person and highly interested in literature, one can imagine that the loss of her husband was more than romantic; the two must have been able to carry on long and serious discussions about literature and the arts. This volume, printed on heavy coated paper, is usually found in much worse condition, and we've never encountered one in a dust jacket. As such, a wonderful example.
