Contains foldout view of Hampton with one-inch tear on one fold. Some edge, corner and surface wear but still square and securely bound. This is a well-known chronicle of Hampton Institute (originally Hampton Normal and Industrial Institute, now Hampton University) located near Hampton Roads Virginia by two professors. The Institute was originally an African-American college and the authors were professors there. The last 85 pages are arrangements of African-American songs by the Chairnan of the music department at the college. Interesting bookplate of Dion A. Stams, Sr. On front pastedown. Stams was an African-American book collector from New York. This plate, which is a copy, is dated 1969. (Interestingly, we once had a Carter Woodson book that had a color bookplate for Stams that may have been the original from which this copy was produced. ) Blockson 5958. ; Foldout panoramic engraving of Hampton Institute. ; B&W Illustration; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 256 pages.

Fold-out frontispiece view of this historically black research university that was then called Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. Book is slightly rubbed at base of spine and small stain, lower right of cover. Text block is very clean, with the exception of very small stains on last page and index page. This book was written by two Hampton teachers and sold to raise funds as the Hampton Singers traveled throughout the north. Includes an appendix with printed music for 50 songs arranged by Thomas P. Fenner, the head of the music department. The appendix also includes information about the school's classes, schedules and principles, proving a window into the life of the 226 students enrolled at the time, including the school's most famous alumni, Booker T. Washington, who attended from 1872 to 1875.

Near fine in original green cloth with gold lettering. (top edge slightly bumped, a bit of wear to head of spine and usual light toning to pages, but a tight, clean and very attractive copy).
