Ich danke Ihnen vielmals und will nur hoffen, dass Sie von solchen Abrechnungen noch nicht bedrückt werden. Leider kann man nichts dagegen tun, dass Kinder und Enkel über einen hinauswachsen, bis nichts mehr zu sehen ist [.]". - Nadler war seit 1931 als Ordinarius für deutsche Literatur an der Universität Wien tätig, veröffentlichte über 300 germanistische Arbeiten und wurde insbesondere durch seine 1912-28 erstmals erschienene "Literaturgeschichte der deutschen Stämme und Landschaften" bekannt, in der er, ausgehend von Stämmen und Siedlungsbewegungen, die Entwicklung der deutschen Literatur aus landschaftlicher Perspektive beschrieb. Wiewohl die vierte Auflage des großen Werkes rassentheoretische Thesen beinhaltet, die konträr zu den vorangegangenen das Gegenteil behaupten und wohl nur als Konzession an die neuen Machthaber verstanden werden können, bietet die "Literaturgeschichte" eine Fülle an Fakten und Daten. Nach Kriegsende wurde Nadler, der ehedem mit Hofmannsthal und Weinheber befreundet gewesen war, die Lehrbefugnis entzogen. Seine Autobiographie "Kleines Nachspiel" erschien 1954. Vgl. Nun nehmen Sie mir einen Stein vom Herzen. Es sind ja immer nur wenige Menschen, die man wahrhaft zu Lesern u. An den Bärenreiter Verlag in Kassel mit der Bitte um biographische Angaben zu dem Schriftsteller Ludwig Derleth (1870-1948) für eine literaturhistorische Arbeit: "Den 'Fränkischen Koran' von Ludwig Derleth habe ich mit grosser Teilnahme zu lesen begonnen. Ich danke Ihnen herzlich. In der umfangreichen literarhistorischen Darstellung, die ich vorbereite, will ich eine einlässlichere Würdigung dieser eigenartigen Dichtung versuchen. Ich wäre Ihnen besonders verbunden, wenn Sie mir einige Grunddaten aus dem Leben des Dichters vermitteln könnten". - Ludwig Derleth hat über 40 Jahre an seinem Monumentalwerk "Der fränkische Koran" (1932) gearbeitet. Vermutlich diente Derleth, der dem katholischen Mystizismus nahe stand, Thomas Mann als Vorlage für Figuren in dessen Novellen "Beim Propheten" und "Gladius Dei" sowie in dessen Roman "Doktor Faustus". - Bei der von Nadler erwähnten "literarhistorischen Darstellung" handelt es sich wohl um den 1941 erschienen 4. Band seiner "Literaturgeschichte des Deutschen Volkes". Nadler zählte zu den führenden Literaturwissenschaftlern des "Dritten Reichs" und wurde aufgrund seiner Rolle im Nationalsozialismus 1947 pensioniert. - Leicht fleckig.
