Condizione: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book examines the interaction betweennationalism and feminism in modern Polish women sphysical culture from the late nineteenth centuryuntil the end of the twentieth century. Unlike mostwestern countries where sportswomen were typicallymarginalized in their athletic endeavors, Polishfemale athletes earned greater respect andrecognition in their physical culture. On manyoccasions, and for varied reasons, women sathleticism in Poland was a source of immense prideand prestige for both the state and society. Thisform of acceptance, however, does not suggest thatsportswomen faced no discrimination in their effortsto become sportive. Women s physicality remained thesubject of intense debate, particularly when thesocio-economic conditions worsened and threatened thesurvival of families. Still, despite the patriarchaland other barricades, the Polish national strugglesfor independence and the emergence of the New Woman created significant institutional and ideologicalspaces for sportswomen to build their physicalculture. Accordingly, this book enriches thehistories of Poland and modern Europe, as well aswomen s and sports studies.
