Die Skulpturen aus Wachs, Fiberglas, Jute und Tierhäuten, die sie gegen Ende der 1960er-Jahre formte, hinterfragten gleichermaßen die Prinzipien der klassischen naturgetreuen Wiedergabe wie die der Pop-Art. Später verwendete Nancy Graves in ihren Arbeiten Wetterkarten und Mondkarten der NASA ebenso wie Zitate aus Paläontologie und Anthropologie, der Kunstgeschichte oder Artefakte anderer Kulturräume. In ihrem Werk verband sie Konzeptkunst mit Land-Art und Neuer Figuration, gab Impulse im Bereich der Recherche-Künste sowie des künstlerischen Films und leistete wichtige Beiträge zur Genderforschung. Die Publikation präsentiert das vielgestaltige uvre der Künstlerin, thematisiert das Verhältnis zu Zeitgenossen und Vorbildern und unternimmt eine Neubewertung seiner kunsthistorischen Bedeutung. Ausstellung: Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst, Aachen 13.10.2013 - 16.2.2014 Perhaps the most surprising works by Nancy Graves (1939 - 1995) are her life-size sculptures of camels and dromedaries. Made of wax, fiberglass, jute, and animal skins in the late 1960s, the sculptures also question the principles behind both true-to-nature, representational art and Pop Art. Later, Graves used NASA weather maps and maps of the moon in her works, while also citing paleontology and anthropology, art history, and artifacts from other cultures. Her work combines Conceptual Art with Land Art and New Figuration, providing ideas for research arts and the art film, and making important contributions to gender research. This publication presents the artist s multifaceted oeuvre, and examines its relationship to the works of her contemporaries and role models, while undertaking a reevaluation of its art historical significance.
