Eese, during the American Civil War. As a member of Chew's Battery, Stuart's Horse Artillery, Eese found himself thrust into the heart of some of the war's most pivotal battles, including Cedar Creek, Cross Keys, Port Republic, and Cedar Mountain. Through Eese's compelling firsthand account, readers gain an unparalleled glimpse into the daily life of a Confederate soldier, from the mundane routines of camp life to the terrifying chaos of battle. The book sheds light on the motivations, fears, and hopes of the men who fought for the Confederacy, offering a nuanced perspective on the complexities of the conflict. As Eese narrates his harrowing experiences, he grapples with the moral dilemmas and horrors of war, bearing witness to the devastating impact it has on both individuals and communities. The author's vivid descriptions and thoughtful reflections provide a profound examination of the human cost of war, exploring themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the limits of human endurance. This book is a valuable contribution to Civil War literature, offering a unique and immersive account of one man's journey through one of the most turbulent periods in American history. Its insights into the nature of war and the resilience of the human spirit make it a compelling read for anyone interested in the American Civil War and its enduring legacies. Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, 362 pgs. Original green cloth, gilt title cover and spine. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Cover with rubbing, wear to edges, spine ends, and corners. Cloth spotted and spine lightly faded. Interior lacks front free endpaper, endpapers and edges soiled, date on title page is circled, else clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The author was a gunner in Chew's Battery, Stuart's Horse Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia. REFERENCES: Krick 347: "Neese, a resident of the lower Shenandoah Valley, kept a war diary in which he faithfully recorded the wide range of interesting and important events which came under his observation. The majority of his war experiences was in the Valley, although his unit was with the Army of Northern Virginia for its campaigns during the second half of 1862 and part of 1864. In the fall of the latter year, Neese was captured and taken north to Point Lookout Prison, where he remained until the summer of 1865. Neese's book is one of the scarcest and most desirable of Neale books dealing with the Civil War." EICHER 295:"Marked by a florid style and literary sidetrips that wander, the work nonetheless contains excellent descriptions of Brandy Station, Port Republic, Poolesville, and Jeb Stuart's great cavalry review in June 1863. The author was chief of artillery of the cavalry corps for the Army of Northern Virginia by the time of his capture, and he offers many recollections of the details of artillery." NEVINS I pg 136: "One of the better pen-pictures of Confederate soldier life; Neese's army service was confined to the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding country." COULTER 336: "The war diary reproduced in this work was evidently edited into smooth writing. The account contains minute details of military movements, is an excellent picture of soldier life, and is equally satisfactory as comment on the country and on civilians with whom Neese became acquainted." DORN II 1136.
