Paperback. Condizione: Fair. This is an account of the slave trade by a native African, former slave. Olaudah Equiano recounts his kidnapping at the age of ten in Africa, his service as the slave of an officer in the British Navy and his years of labour on slave ships until he was able to purchase his freedom in 1766. As a free man on a Central American plantation, he supervised slaves. Increasingly disgusted by their treatment, he returned to England in 1771. In England he worked for the resettlement of blacks in Sierra Leone, married an English woman and became a leading and respected figure in the anti-slave movement. This narrative is an autobiography and a treatise on religion, politics and economics. A readable copy of the book which may include some defects such as highlighting and notes. Cover and pages may be creased and show discolouration.

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. Olaudah Equiano's 19th Century autobiography was one of the first books by a Black author to appear in Western Literature. It has become a classic in its own right, and also a necessary text for understanding the situation of Africans within the extended purview of European society. "The Interesting Narrative of the the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African, Written by Himself" was published entirely by the efforts of the author in 1789, as stated on the title o pages of the original book : "Printed for and Sold by the Author". The book is an account of the slave trade by a native African, former slave, and loyal British subject, and is both an exciting, often terrifying, adventure story and an important precursor to such famous nineteenth century slave narratives as Frederick Douglass's autobiography. ******************************************* "Olaudah Equino recounts his kidnapping in Africa, his service as the slave of an officer in the British navy, and his years of labor on slave ships until he was able to purchase his freedom in 1766. As a free man on a Central American plantation, he supervised slaves, increasingly disgusted by his co-workers, he returned to England in 1774. In England he worked for the resettlement of Blacks in Sierra Leone, married an Englishwoman, and became a leading and respected figure in the anti-slavery movement. A spirited autobiography, a tale of spiritual quest and fulfillment, a sophisticated treatise on religion, politics, and economics, "The Interesting Narrative" is a work of enduring literary and historical Value." *************************************** SERIES : Penguin Classics / TITLE : The Interesting Narrative and Other Writings / AUTHOR : Olaudah Equiano (circa 1735 - 1797) / EDITOR : Vincent Carretta / INTRODUCTION and NOTES : Vincent Carretta / IMPRINT : Penguin Books / PLACE : New York / DATE : (1995) / EDITION : Reprint .
