Decorative cloth binding with gilt lettering and illustrations on the front cover and spine. An old bookshop slip was found within the pages that states "Story of a Negro Boy Refugee in the North and his Family." Condition: Some light mottling to the cloth on the covers. Bright gilt on the front cover and spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. The pages are lightly age-toned with occasional mild foxing; heavier foxing on the tissue guard over the frontispiece. There is an inscription written in ink dated 1874 on the front end paper. Overall the book is in Good+ condition.

Condition is Good+. Cloth shows moderate soiling and surface scuffing across both boards, fraying at the head of the spine, and rubbing at extremities; gilt to front board and spine remains legible. The front free endpaper carries a pencil inscription dated "13 Octo 1912", placing this copy in the year of publication. Some age-toning to prelim pages and text block edges consistent with the period; text and plates clean and bright throughout, all twenty-eight colour plates present with tissue guards intact. No dust jacket (as issued). A sound copy of a scarce Edwardian colour-plate title, complete with all plates in very good order.

Music, important to the Osgoods, figures in most of the books. The families bear the musical surname Carrol and periodically give evidence of their tuneful tendencies. Canary's mother and aunt play the piano; her father, the flute, and her grandfather, the bass-viol.
