If she lacks it, she may hope to gain it. If she already has it, she will certainly lose it. But what is it? Not an objective thing, Francette Pacteau tells us, but a generic term for an unspecifiable number of psychological experiences in the mind of the observer. What these experiences are, what causes them, and how they manifest themselves as a notion of beauty is the subject of this book. Less interested in the contingent object of desire than the fantasy that frames it, Pacteau considers the staging of the aesthetic emotion. Her analysis extends from the Classical ideals of beauty, through Renaissance poetry to the recent formulations of Hollywood. Her book is an ambitious attempt to describe the mise-en-scene of beauty within a particular field of representations that of the beauty of a woman. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Er lebt und arbeitet in San Francisco. Victor Burgin hat am Goldsmiths College, der University of California, Santa Cruz und der European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Schweiz unterrichtet. --- Victor Burgin wurde bekannt als Konzeptkunstler. Burgin arbeitet mit Fotografie und Film - er bezeichnet Malen "als anachronistisches Beschmieren von gewebtem Gewebe mit farbigem Dreck". Seine Arbeit ist stark durch verschiedene Theoretiker und Philosophen beeinflusst, insbesondere durch Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, Michel Foucault und Roland Barthes. Sein Werk beschaftigt sich mit der Nebeneinanderstellung von Text und Bild sowie der Darstellung und Reprasentation von Frauen und Fetisch. --- 1986 wurde Burgin in Anerkennung verschiedener Ausstellungen am Institute of Contemporary Arts und in der Kettle's Yard Gallery in Cambridge sowie fur eine Kollektion seiner theoretischen Schriften und Essays (The End of Theory and Between) fur den Turner Preis nominiert.
