This book offers a fascinating glimpse into the intricate world of Kandyan law and society, as it existed in the waning days of the last Kandyan kingdom. The author delves into the complex system of justice, meticulously outlining the hierarchy of chiefs and their respective powers, from the absolute authority of the King to the more limited jurisdiction of village headmen. The text highlights the importance of tradition and custom in the absence of written law, revealing a system where disputes were often settled through public hearings and oaths rather than written codes. The book explores the intricate web of social relationships, emphasizing the importance of caste and lineage in determining one's rights and obligations. Beyond the legal framework, the author provides valuable insights into the daily lives of the Kandyan people, exploring topics like hunting, agriculture, and the beliefs surrounding sorcery.
