Tibbets (1915-2007) was the pilot of the Enola Gay. Named for his mother, this plane carried and dropped the first atomic bomb in history. The target was Hiroshima, and the bomb, code named "Little Boy" was delivered on August 6, 1945 and was the catalyst for ending the war. Tibbets wrote two books about the operation. Tibbetts was commander of the 393rd Bombardment Squadron of the 315th Bombardment Wing. The Enola Gay had a crew of twelve men and took off from Tinian Island at 2:47 am with an atomic 5 ton bomb, 7000 gallons of fuel and later at 8;15 am on August 6th, 1945 dropped the world's first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. After 12 hours and 13 minutes Tibbets and his B-29 Bomber returned to Tinian Island. 8000 people in Hiroshima were killed or mortally wounded. This action brought about the end of the War with Japan in World War II. Paul Tibbets retired from the Air Force as a Brigadier General. Very fine.
