The beautiful but consumptive Margaret Harding comes from England to a sanatorium in the Great Karoo, where she immediately becomes embroiled in the crosscurrents of emergent Africa as well as the clash of personalities in the remote sanatorium. Kamis, the son of a chief, a mysterious figure in the novel, had been sent by the Colonial government with his father to England, where Kamis was educated. Margaret comes to know him closely, as well as the larger-than-life characters of the sanatorium. Margaret Harding has begun to attract more and more attention. The time is ripe for it to take its place as an important work dealing with major issues. It is about emergent Africa - a prophetic work far in advance of its time. The time is ripe too for Perceval Gibbon to be accepted as a significant writer on Africa, one who can construct a vibrant plot and a variety of colourful characters.".
