Each forum is dominated by a temple, enclosed by walls, and built on axial symmetry. Their axes run parallel or perpendicular to each other: the fora of Caesar, Vespasian, and Trajan from NW to SE, those of Augustus and Nerva from NE to SW. The complex is bounded by the Forum Romanum, the Capitoline, and the Quirinal and the Esquiline Hills. None of the five fora have been excavated entirely; one of them, the Forum of Vespasian, not at all. It is a well-known piece. At first glance it does not seem to present us with any problems. The subject matter appears to be both an ordinary and an obvious one-a winged victory in a biga. Among Greek and Roman gems there are very many similar ones; the same subject was represented in other species of ancient art as well. One of the earliest and finest examples is the gold earring that is also in the museum in Boston, a particularly beautiful and well preserved piece from the fourth century B.C. On our cameo, Victory drives the chariot over either clouds or waves. Yet the identification of the theme is not quite so certain as one might think. There could be at least one alternative: Aurora-Eos appears in like fashion as a female figure, with or without wings, in a biga. From 1950 to 1960 he was a member of the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. From 1960 to 1984 he was professor at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. While his early publications dealt with Roman, specifically Flavian, architecture and sculpture, from the 1950s on, he devoted himself primarily to Roman painting. Christine Alexander (1893-1975) ioined the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1923, serving as the Curator of Greek and Roman Art between 1949 and 1959. Her acquisitions and publications of greatest note were in the area of Roman art. This book makes all of the wall paintings from Boscotrecase available for the first time in specially taken new color photographs. The text which was first published in 1962 has been revised and significantly enhanced by a meticulous study of the procedures, tools, and materials employed by the artists working at Boscotrecase.
