This publication is the first to feature Twachtman's depictions of floral and figurative subjects created during his years in Greenwich, Connecticut, 1889 to 1902. Like Claude Monet, Twachtman cultivated a garden which provided the subject matter for his paintings and pastels. These floral themes, rare in the artist's oeuvre, are notable for their merging of landscape and still life and for their bold and modern style. Twachtman's paintings of figures are similar to his floral renderings in their novel combination of figural and landscape genres. In the Sunlight: The Floral and Figurative Art of J H. Twachtman includes sixty~five illustrations, more than thirty~five of these in color, and four essays by noted scholars in the field: Richard J. Boyle writes on the mastery of technique evident in Twachtman's floral depictions; William H. Gerdts, on the pastels and paintings of flowers; John Douglass Hale, on the figure paintings; and Lisa N. Peters, on Twachtman's garden in Greenwich.
