Prima edizione
viii, 256 pp. Pages interleaved. Volume 1 only. Original leather binding with beautiful gilt title on leather label. Last few pages of text and endpaper loosening. Leather scraped, light foxing and toning. Owner name in period ink on ffep and what appears to be a different name (also in period ink) on the upper right corner of the title page (see pics). Error in paging: p. 210-216 misnumbered 110-116. While one source lists that issued as a 3-volume set, the pagination on this volume does not line up with that set ( that set lists as Vol. 1: viii, 168 p.; v. 2: [2], 169-344 p.; v. 3: [2], 345-510, [2] p.). Could have been that this one was bound as a 2-volume set instead? Evans 21472. Sabin 88013. Turnbull, I:263. While a 1799 edition is currently available on the market for over $13K, I can find no auction records for the 1788 edition, nor any record of a copy ever offered for sale at a major auction. Worldcat locates only four copies of which only one is interleaved as is this copy and that in three rather than four volumes. An interleaved copy, with two blank leaves inserted between each printed leaf; in addition, each volume has a separate printed title page designating Volume I, etc. Incredibly SCARCE title, again never seen at a major auction. An important item of South Carolina history! Not Ex-Lib.
