Niemand muss ein Atheist nach der Lektüre dieses Buchs sein, aber niemand wird in seinem Glauben bestärkt sein, es sei denn er/sie ist der stärkste Zelot, denn der sieht in jedem Widerspruch den Willen Gottes. Viel ruhiger B. Russell, jeder nach seiner Facon, und das ist wieder -bemerkensweiterweise - sehr deutsch. Viel Spaß beim Lesen. Der Engländer Bertrand Russel (1872-1970) war nicht nur ein bedeutender Mathematiker und Philosoph, sondern auch ein politisch und gesellschaftlich engagierter Freidenker und Publizist. Dieses sehr lesenswerte Buch versammelt Texte von Bertrand Russel, die in den 1920er bis 1950er Jahren entstanden sind und sich kritisch mit der Religion im allgemeinen und dem Christentum im besonderen beschäftigen. Der titelgebende Vortrag "Warum ich kein Christ bin" stammt aus dem Jahr 1927 und unterzieht das Christentum einer Generalkritik. Zunächst untersucht Russel die Gottesbeweise und kommt zu dem Schluss, dass sich die Existenz Gottes mit der Vernunft nicht beweisen lasse. Diese Erkenntnis ist nicht neu, schon Immanuel Kant hat dies im 18. Jahrhundert gezeigt. Trotzdem ist es ein Gewinn zu lesen, wie Russel argumentiert. So lässt sich wahrscheinlich jeder Mensch vom Beweis der ersten Ursache faszinieren: Alles, was wir kennen, hat eine Ursache. Also muss es für alles eine Ursache geben, und die erste Ursache ist eben Gott. Russel widerlegt dies mit einfachen und treffenden Worten: Wenn alles eine Ursache haben muss, muss auch Gott eine Ursache haben, und wenn es etwas geben kann, das keine Ursache hat, kannn das ebensogut die Welt wie Gott sein. Sodann beschäftigt sich Russel mit der Person Christi, dem er zunächst einige vorzügliche Charaktereigenschaften zugesteht, wie etwas das Predigen der Nächstenliebe. Als schweren Charaktermangel wirft Russel jedoch Christus vor, dass er an die Hölle geglaubt und mit der Hölle gedroht hat. Damit, so Russel, habe Christus viel Leid und Elend verursacht. Schließlich meint Russel, dass Quelle der Religion die Angst sei. Grund für Menschen, an Gott zu glauben, sei der unvernünftige Wunsch, eine Art großen Bruder zu haben, der einen an die Hand nimmt und vor allen Widrigkeiten beschützt. In dem Aufsatz "Woran ich glaube" entwirft Russel ein aufgeklärtes und rationales Weltbild. Maßgebend für unsere Welt sollen, so Russel, Menschlichkeit und Vernunft sein, nicht aber die Dogmen unwissender Männer, die vor 2000 Jahren gelebt haben. In diesem Aufsatz fällt der wunderbare Satz: "Das gute Leben ist von Liebe beseelt und von Wissen geleitet." In dem Aufsatz "Hat das Christentum nützliche Beiträge zur menschlichen Zivilisation geleistet?" kritisiert Russel die seiner Meinung fortschrittsfeindlichen Wirkungen der christlichen Lehre. Überhaupt ist eine Kritik an der christlichen Sexualmoral mit ihren nach Russels Ansicht schädlichen Folgen ein Hauptanliegen vieler Texte. Ein kleines philosophisches Highlight ist die Diskussion mit einem Jesuitenpater über die - an sich längst erledigte - Frage, ob sich die Existenz Gottes beweisen lasse. Russel betont in diesem Gespräch, er sei kein Atheist, er glaube also nicht, dass sich die Nichtexistenz Gottes beweisen lasse. Vielmehr sei er Agnostiker, er halte es nicht für möglich, sinnvolle Aussagen über die Existenz Gottes zu machen. Beigegeben ist dem Buch ein Text von Paul Edwards, in welchem dieser dokumentiert, wie Bertrand Russel wegen seiner liberalen und kirchenkritischen Haltung im Jahr 1941 von bigotten und frömmlerischen Geistlichen, Publizisten und Politikern daran gehindert wurde, am City College of New York mathematische Vorlesungen (in denen es gar nicht um Religion gehen sollte!) zu halten. Wenn man sich vor Augen führt, wie mächtig religiöser Fundamentalismus heute noch oder wieder ist, erkennt man, wie erschreckend aktuell dieser Artikel ist. Bertrand Russel, der übrigens 1950 den Nobelpreis für Literatur erhielt, schreibt ausgesprochen gewinnend, in einer - wie ich meine - typisch angelsächsischen Art. Einfach, verständlich, gelassen, elegant und intelligent, ohne jeden Fanatismus, dafür mit einem guten Humor. Natürlich fordert das Buch, was ja kein Nachteil ist, den Leser auch zum Widerspruch heraus. So hat Russel, wie auch nicht anders möglich, nicht das Christentum vor Augen, wie wir es heute kennen, sondern ein letztlich im viktorianischen Zeitalter wurzelndes verklemmtes und bigottes Frömmlertum. Die von Russel angeprangerten Charaktermängel Christi lassen sich für die Theologie zwanglos aufklären. Ein recht verstandenes Christentum wird wohl als Kern der Lehre Christi die Verkündigung der Liebe Gottes, das Heilsversprechen an die Menschen und das Gebot der Nächstenliebe erkennen, nicht aber Höllendrohungen, die aus dem biblischen Kontext interpretiert werden müssen. Dass Russel dem Christentum vorwirft, es habe den Individualismus gefördert und damit den gesellschaftlichen Fortschritt behindert, ist wohl nur zeitgebunden zu verstehen, wenn man davon ausgeht, dass Russel hier den Egoismus vor Augen hat, der sich im Wirtschaftsliberalismus austobt. Heute, nach der Erfahrung zweier totalitärer Diktaturen (übrigens war Russel ein geschworener Gegner sowohl des Nationalsozialismus als auch des Stalinismus!), wird man die Lehre von der Menschenwürde, die ja unter anderem ihre Wurzel in der christlichen Lehre von der Gottesebenbildlichkeit des Menschen und der Lehre von der individuellen Erlösung des Menschen durch Christus hat, als großen Fortschritt empfinden. Auch die Lehre von der Erbsünde, die Russel als unwürdig und erniedrigend bezeichnet, lässt sich anders verstehen, als Russel dies tut. Dass der Mensch aus eigener Kraft nicht Vollkommenheit erreichen kann, aber auch nicht muss, ist letztlich eine zutiefst menschliche Erkenntnis. Aber dies ändert nichts daran, dass das Buch das souveräne Zeugnis eines freien und humanen Geistes ist. Es lohnt sich, das Buch zu lesen. Reih.
