Softcover. Condizione: g. Octavo. 156pp. Uncut. Original printed wrappers with black lettering on front cover and spine, and printer's device on front and back cover. Printer's device on title-page. Fascinating work beeing a compilation of fragments of Numenius's very numerous works. The author's object was to trace the doctrines of Plato up to Pythagoras, and at the same time to show that they were not at variance with the dogmas and mysteries of the Brahmins, Jews, Magi and Egyptians. His intention was to restore the philosophy of Plato, the genuine Pythagorean and mediator between Socrates and Pythagoras in its original purity, cleared from the Aristotelian and Stoic doctrines, and purified from the unsatisfactory and perverse explanations, which he said were found even in Speusippus and Xenocrates, and which, through the influence of Arcesilaus and Carneades had led to a bottomless skepticism. Minor age wear on wrappers with spine slightly age-toned. Some pen underlining throughout. Text in French and Greek. Wrappers and interior in overall good to very good condition.

Softcover. Condizione: vg. First edition. Octavo. 236, [8]pp. Original printed wrappers with printer's device on front cover. Fascinating work being a treatise against Hierocles (a Roman governor and Neoplatonic philosopher), in which Eusebius combated the former's glorification of Apollonius of Tyana. Minor age-toning on spine. Text in French. Wrappers in overall very good, interior in fine condition. About the author: Eusebius of Caesarea (c. 263-339 AD), called Eusebius Pamphili, became the Bishop of Caesarea in Palestine about the year 314. Eusebius, historian, exegete and polemicist is one of the more renowned Church Fathers. He (with Pamphilus) was a scholar of the Biblical canon. He wrote "Demonstrations of the Gospel", "Preparations for the Gospel", and "On Discrepancies between the Gospels", studies of the Biblical text. As "Father of Church History" he produced the "Ecclesiastical History", "On the Life of Pamphilus", the "Chronicle" and "On the Martyrs.".

Softcover. Condizione: g. First edition. Octavo. 222, [4]pp. Uncut. Original printed wrappers with printer's device on covers and title-page. The Theurgia, or De Mysteriis Aegyptiorum (On the Mysteries of the Egyptians), was attributed to Iamblichus Chalcidensis, a Neoplatonic philosopher who studied under Porphyry. Porphyry is known to have had a disagreement with Iamblichus over the practice of theurgy, and the Mysteries consists mainly of Iamblichus' responses to the criticisms of his teacher. Proclus, writing 100 years after Iamblichus, seems to have ascribed to him the authorship of the Mysteries. However, the differences between this book and Iamblichus' other works in style and in some points of doctrine have led some to question whether Iamblichus was the actual author. Still, the treatise certainly originated from his school, and in its systematic attempt to give a speculative justification of the polytheistic cult practices of the day, it marks a turning-point in the history of thought where Iamblichus stood. Minor age wear on wrappers with spine age-toned. Sporadic pen underlining (only on Greek text). Text in French and Greek. Wrappers in overall good to very good, interior in very good condition.

Paris, Picard, 1969. Ouvrage publié avec le concours du CNRS. In-8 broché de 396 p. Un ouvrage fondamental pour les antiquisants spécialistes de la religion. Le livre est en excellent état : mis à part un dos un peu insolé, il est impeccable.
