CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Covers have old tape stains where previous owner taped down the dj cover. While it protected the DJ, it left stains on the covers as well as the endpapers. Otherwise the book and DJ are VG-VG+. The DJ is now in a new mylar sleeve and remnants of the old tape are removed; unfortunately the adhesive staining from the tape remains. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Well done publication of an excellent personal narrative of a Confederate artilleryman. Well edited, done with care. REFERENCES: Nevins I, 147:"One of the few good recollections by a Confederate artilleryman; Col. Poague relied on several published works to refresh his memory.".

Fine in bright, crisp dust jacket with the only flaw being a shallow tear bottom edge of the front panel. The reminiscences of William Thomas Poague who served four years in the artillery of the Army of Northern Virginia in the Civil War. His first service was with the Rockbridge Artillery, which he commanded from April 1862 to April 1863. After Chancellorsville he ws promoted to lieutenant. colonel. His manuscript diary was discovered by Monroe Cockrell who attended VMI during the period that Poague was treasurer of that institution. Though the jacket boldly proclaims "First Time Published", it was actually first issued by an obscure publisher in 1957.
