This collection presents, for the first time, a much-needed synthesis of the major research themes and findings that characterize the Woodland Period in the southeastern United States. The Woodland Period (ca. 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1000) has been the subject of a great deal of archaeological research over the past 25 years. Researchers have learned that in this approximately 2000-year era the peoples of the Southeast experienced increasing sedentism, population growth, and organizational complexity. At the beginning of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely bound by collective burial rituals. But by the first millennium A.D., some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centers ruled by hereditary elites. Maize was now the primary food crop. Perhaps most importantly, the ancient animal-focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with one another. This volume synthesizes the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about while analyzing the period's archaeological record. In gathering the latest research available on the Woodland Period, the editors have included contributions from the full range of specialists working in the field, highlighted major themes, and directed readers to the proper primary sources. Of interest to archaeologists and anthropologists, both professional and amateur, this will be a valuable reference work essential to understanding the Woodland Period in the Southeast.

Developed in the mid-20th century, the ISB utilizes a series of sentence stems that individuals complete, revealing their unique thoughts, feelings, and attitudes. The author meticulously guides readers through the rationale behind the ISB, its development, and its scoring system. This includes a detailed explanation of how responses are categorized and assigned numerical values, allowing for both quantitative and qualitative analysis. Through illustrative examples and practice cases, the book demonstrates the ISB's potential for uncovering a wide range of psychological insights. Readers are invited to explore the complexities of human personality, from conflict and maladjustment to positive traits and healthy coping mechanisms. Ultimately, this book offers a valuable tool for understanding individual differences and the intricate tapestry of human experience. By illuminating the power of the ISB, it paves the way for deeper self-awareness and more effective clinical interventions. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Neuware - This volume stands as a key general resource for archaeologists working in the region extending from Louisiana through Mississippi north to Missouri and Kentucky, and it represents an opportunity to influence for decades a large part of the archaeological work to take place in the Southeast. The book responds to a need for a comprehensive archaeological overview of the Lower Mississippi Valley that forms a portion of an interstate corridor spanning nine states that will run from southern Michigan to the Texas-Mexico border. The culturally sensitive Mississippi Delta is one of the richest archaeological areas in North America, and it is crucial that research designs be comprehensive, coordinated, and meet current preservation and future research needs. The authors are well-respected researchers from both within and outside the region with expertise in the full range of topics that comprise American archaeology. They examine matters of method and theory, the application of materials science, geophysics, and other high-tech tools in archaeology that provide for optimum data-recovery.
