An essential collector piece for Deighton completists. Almost as new, just a very slightly worn slipcase, and a tiny production wrinkle on the front of the cover binding. It is in fountain pen ink, and the printed name is cancelled. publisher's blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine, spine and upper and lower edges slightly sunned, unclipped dustjacket, very slight wear to dustjacket, overall a highly collectable copy; it is a slightly scruffy third printing of the first edition of T.S. Eliot's Notes towards the Definition of Culture, within a protected unclipped dust jacket. This is also slightly scruffy. But it has no damage, no annotations or underlinings. No bent corners either. It is very nearly Near Fine. Notes towards the Definition of Culture is T.S. Eliot's canonical essay on the culture of his time and place, and the notion of 'culture' itself. In this essay critiquing modern society, Eliot argues that culture must be organic, and cannot be planned or imposed. His chief aim is to persuade the reader to decide upon a meaning for the word 'culture' (and equally for the word 'civilisation') before they use it.

He is gifted and can be funny and he can make you sad. He has actually held this first edition hardback book and SIGNED it on the title page, in a blue felt tip pen. It has a slightly and deliberately stressed looking rear of the jacket, which you can see in one of my photos. Some people think it is a fault. But it is not a fault. This jacket also has an official 'SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR' sticker on it. I must say that this collection makes you want to meet Tom Hanks. Shake him by the hand. The hand that actually held this book open when he signed it. We've all watched him on screen. And here in these wonderful stories we catch another side to his great talent. Signed by Author.

Most hardcover copies disappeared into libraries with the subsequent abuses of stamps and inserts. This one obviously never found itself anywhere near a library, and got itself into the hands of someone who cared because it is in better shape than any copy I have seen. Clean and tight text block, binding a little sunned at the top edge, but no bent corners to the binding. No inscriptions, no turned down corners. Jacket is brilliant too. A stunning collection of truly great SF stories. Niven's second book, and I believe this was its only hardcover issue.
