With 96 illustrations. The book was published to coincide with the International Surrealist Exhibition held in London between 11 June and 4 July 1936. ***Very good in grey cloth-covered boards with black and red decorative titles to the spine. The boards have some marks commensurate with age and handling, but are in good condition, with just some wear at the head and tail of the spine with some fraying to the cloth at the head of the spine. Corners tips just slightly softened and creased. The binding is straight with no reading lean. Spine tight. Page block edges clean - just slightly darkened at the top edge. Internally near fine with no inscriptions. No off-setting or foxing to the interior pages. Paper stock clean. No creases or tears. No dustwrapper. ***251 pages. 208mm x 145mm. ***Contents: Introduction by Herbert Read, 'Limits not Frontiers of Surrealism' by André Breton, 'Surrealism at this Time and Place' by Hugh Sykes Davies, 'Poetic Evidence' by Paul Éluard and '1870 to 1936' by Georges Hugnet. ***'The International Surrealist Exhibition was held from 11 June to 4 July 1936 at the New Burlington Galleries, near Savile Row in London's Mayfair, England. The exhibition was organised by committees from England, France, Belgium, Scandinavia and Spain. The English organising committee consisted of: Hugh Sykes Davies, David Gascoyne, Humphrey Jennings, McKnight Kauffer, Rupert Lee (Chairman), Diana Brinton Lee (Secretary), Henry Moore, Paul Nash, Roland Penrose (Honorary Treasurer). --- The French organising committee were: André Breton, Paul Éluard, Georges Hugnet, Man Ray. --- The remaining nations had a single committee representative: E. L. T. Mesens, Belgium - Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen, Denmark - Salvador Dalí, Spain. The number of exhibits, paintings, sculpture, objects and drawings displayed during the exhibition's run was around 390. Danish painter Wilhelm Freddie's entries never made it to the exhibition, as they were confiscated by British Customs representatives for being pornographic. According to ruling law at the time, the works had to be destroyed, but this was avoided at the last minute and they were despatched back to Denmark. ***The most iconic image of the exhibition is the opening day performance of Sheila Legge, who stood in the middle of Trafalgar Square, posing in a white, drop tail hemmed wedding dress ensemble inspired by a Salvador Dalí painting, with her head completely obscured by a flower arrangement.' (Wiki) ***'Herbert Read was a champion of modern British artists such as Paul Nash, Ben Nicholson, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. He became associated with Nash's contemporary arts group Unit One. Read was professor of fine arts at the University of Edinburgh (1931-33) and editor of the trend-setting Burlington Magazine (1933-38). He was one of the organisers of the London International Surrealist Exhibition in 1936 and editor of the book "Surrealism", published in 1936, which included contributions from André Breton, Hugh Sykes Davies, Paul Éluard, and Georges Hugnet. He also served as a trustee of the Tate Gallery and as a curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum (1922-39), as well as co-founding the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) with Roland Penrose in 1947. He was one of the earliest English writers to take notice of existentialism, and was strongly influenced by proto-existentialist thinker Max Stirner.' (Wiki) ***An important surrealist anthology, and an important work of literature on the history of Surrealism. With 96 fabulous illustrations.
