Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Printed for, and sold by The Catholic Book Society, 5, Essex-Bridge, Parliament-street. xvi, 560 pages. 140x90mm. Contemporary calf, with red label on spine and author's surname lettered in gilt. *Milner's 'The End of Religious Controversy' was originally conceived in 1801 as a refutation of Porteus's 'Brief Confutation of the Chief Errors of the Church of Rome', but was not published until 1818. This rare pocket edition was issued for 'The Catholic Book Society' which was officially titled 'The Catholic Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge throughout Ireland'. No printer is given, but 5 Essex Bridge was also the address of the printer and publisher William Joseph Battersby in 1830. This copy with the bookseller's ticket of Stephen Moore, 45 Paul St. Cork.* Binding worn with joints cracked but holding, some margin wear and tears to three leaves but with no loss of meaning, otherwise a very good copy without any library stamps, inscriptions or other markings. Aggiungi al carrello154pp [plus 16pp Explanation of the Plates, pages numbered 135 to 150], 12 plates; xii, 174pp, 10 plates 24x16, half bound in green calf over marbled boards, spine decorated in glt and red. Boards and spine rather rubbed and worn, edges of spine splitting, some pencil annotations (in the form of corrections, apparently), hand written dedication on fep, some browning and foxing, fair to good copy thus. The odd numbering of the Essays appears to because of the insertion of the List of Cathedrals after the original page 134, resulting in two pages with each number between 135 and 150.The handwritten dedication is an In Memoriam to Arthur Bertram Ridley Wallis, who was killed in a motor accident on 16th December 1931. Many of his brass rubbings can be found in the V&A. His name is on the ffep, dated 1893 which indicates that the book was his.
