Las prendas de vestir, los televisores, los automóviles y otros artículos que se ensamblan en las nuevas empresas de la región son productos globales: sus insumos provienen de diversos países, el proceso de trabajo se despliega por todo el orbe y se venden en los cinco continentes. Pero la fábrica global no produce automáticamente una cultura laboral global. Una computadora puede funcionar perfectamente pese a que sus componentes sean fabricados en lugares tan remotos como Taiwan, Singapur, Brasil, Inglaterra, Japón, Estados Unidos, Guatemala y México. Su ensamblado puede ser coherente y exacto, y los resultados, previsibles. Pero cuando se trata de ensamblar culturas, el panorama cambia de manera radical: los componentes no son objetos inanimados, sino trabajadores dotados de voluntad, raciocinio, sentimientos, costumbres y sueños. No se produce una mezcla homogénea, sino que persisten las singularidades, surgen malentendidos, se generan discrepancias y, a veces, se construyen consensos. Luis Reygadas analiza estos procesos a partir del estudio de empresas maquiladoras en México y Guatemala. Anthropologists, cultural critics, historians, and political scientists from North and South America offer new and varied perspectives, building on the sociologist Charles Tilly's relational framework for understanding enduring inequalities. While one essay is a broad yet nuanced analysis of Latin American inequality and its persistence, another is a fine-grained ethnographic view of everyday life and aspirations among shantytown residents living on the outskirts of Lima.
