Van Horne and John Speyer, to which as been added the name of Susan Rivington, in the amount of $50,000. With seals after each of the names. "Know all men by these presents, that we Augustus C. Van Horne, John Speyer, and Susan Rivington are jointly and severally held and firmly bound unto James Morris Esqr. Sheriff of the City and County of New York. Whereas the above bounden Augustus C. Van Horne is now in the custody of the above named James Morris. on civil process only, and is permitted by the said Sheriff to go at large within the liberties of the jail of the City of New York, as the same liberties and limits thereof are designated by the Court of Common Pleas." Augustus C. Van Horne (1765-1853), son of Cornelius Van Horne, was a well-known merchant. John Speyer was a merchant in a partnership with Jacob Mark, their company, Mark & Speyer, failing spectacularly in 1799, growing into an immense lawsuit not settled until 1820. Susan Rivington was the daughter of James Rivington, publisher, sometime loyalist and later spy for Washington. There is a separate bond of James Rivington, Jr. and Susan Rivington to James Morris, Sheriff of New York City, also dated February 1, 1799, at the New York Historical Society. The Rivingtons and Van Hornes were related by marriage. James Morris (1764-1827) was Sheriff of New York County from 1798-1801. The cause for the bond is not known, though the three incidents, the two bonds signed by Rivington and the failure of Speyer's firm, all in the same year, would suggest a relationship See: 1. Tipped to the top of the front free end paper is a hand written letter on Windsor Castle headed note paper from the author concerning the publication of this volume dated 2nd November 1889, some three years before it went to press, SIGNED by the author 'R. Holmes'. From Lord Balfour's private library with pencil note to this effect inside the rear end paper. Neatly repaired tear across the top quarter of the spine, contents without any foxing in very near Fine condition. This English-born American bookseller and publisher was controversial during the American Revolution for his suspected Tory sympathies, especially since he published the "New York Gazetteer," even returning to England briefly early during the war; but it's believed he was actually a spy for the Americans, and smuggled messages to General Washington printed on thin paper bound into the covers of books. Below this is a well-drafted plat map showing land parcels between "9th Av." at left, "8th Ave." at right, "22d St" at top and "21. St." at bottom -- with the two lots in question here neatly marked "1" and "2" in the lower right area of this block. The purchaser here was Bishop BENJAMIN MOORE (1748-1816) the second bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and president of Columbia College -- best remembered as the father of Clement C. Moore (1779-1863), the scholar who penned the immortal poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" in 1823. Bishop Moore and his son owned a number of properties in this area, mostly in the Chelsea Historic District slightly north of the two lots he purchased from Rivington. A scarce document with interesting connections. Accompanied by a superb and itself scarce vintage steel-engraved portrait, heavy stock 7" X 10½", n.p., n.y. [mid-19th century]. Fine. A bold and handsome head-and-shoulders portrait of Rivington gazing intently at the viewer, looking rather like Washington himself, engraved by A.H. Ritchie.
