Materials presented drawn largely from the Jean-Noël Herli Archive. "Exhibition invitations? I've seen a few. Any working art critic inevitably acquires an extensive knowledge of this genre of printed ephemera. Heralding gallery and museum shows, invitations flood the mailbox, crowd the desk and all too often accumulate so intractably on the kitchen counter as to seem part of the decor. You can't live with them, and until the show is over, you can't throw them out. Still, life without such art-world byproducts would be a lot more difficult. Not only do they convey the important facts -- the who, when and where -- of shows that need to be seen. They're also advertisements bent on seducing us into attendance by being clever, eye-catching or provocative -- although sometimes they nip interest in the bud. (There's probably no art lover with mailing-list credentials who hasn't held up some gallery announcement and said, "Forget it!") Invitations are style statements in a minor key, ancillary artworks of a collective sort. Designed by artists, by graphic designers, by art dealers and museum curators -- usually a combination of the above -- they are the advance guard for the real thing. Their merit is judged in the very act of reading one's mail." -- Roberta Smith, "Art Invitations As Small Scraps Of History," New York Times, May 16, 1993. Very Good. Light edge wear. Contents clean and unmarked.

[ISBN: 9781856694643].An important monograph on Robert Brownjohn (August 8, 1925 - August 1, 1970), an American graphic designer who achieved considerable cult status. Although his career lasted less than a quarter of a century, he created more iconic works than many designers who were active for three times as long, and consistently delivered work of the highest quality.Born in New Jersey in 1925, he studied with Lászlá Moholy-Nagy at the Chicago Institute of Design (formerly the New Bauhaus) in the 1940s. He worked in New York in the 1950s and spent the 1960s in London's vibrant King's Road neighborhood. He is best known for his title sequences for the Bond films From Russia With Love (1963) and Goldfinger (1964), but he produced countless other influential works, and his impact on American and British design was undeniable. Brownjohn's death in 1970 deprived graphic design of one of its most brilliant and original minds.

Elle met en forme les idées de Brownjohn sur l?importance visuelle de l?écriture : « I think the revolution in typography has been in terms of image. The picture and the word have become one thing. The only real advance in advertising typography has been in the use of type not as an adjunct to an illustration of the image but in its use as the image itself. You have found that the old image, the old word, doesn?t mean enough any more to say what you want it to say. It?s too familiar? I think perhaps our modern poets have created the modern typography ». Au moyen de la seule typographie Helvetica, il trouve dans l?espace de la page comment exprimer du mouvement, évoquer une image, une idée, avec finesse et souvent avec humour.
