In enger Verbindung mit der Ur- und Frühgeschichte, der Gesellschaftslehre, der Religionswissenschaft, der Kunstgeschichte, der Sprachwissenschaft, der Geographie und der Wirtschaftslehre sowie mit verschiedenen naturkundlichen Forschungszweigen ist ihr eigentliches Tätigkeitsfeld die Untersuchung des Wesens und der Entwicklung aller jener Menschheitsgruppen, die noch unmittelbarer als die Völker höherer Zivilisation von einer nur unvollkommen beherrschten natürlichen Umwelt abhängig sind. Es sind dies vor allem die oft mißverständlich primitiv" genannten, früher der westlichen Geschichtsgemeinschaft fernstehenden, meist farbigen Völker außereuropäischer Erdteile, deren Existenzgrundlage auf Freibeuterwirtschaft, einfachem Ackerbau oder nomadischer Tierhaltung beruhte oder noch beruht. Erst durch die anthropologische und ethnologische Erforschung solcher Lebensformen konnte das Wissen um die Anfänge und den Aufstieg der menschlichen Gesellschaft überhaupt gefestigt, erst dadurch die urwüchsigen bäuerlichen Bevölkerungsschichten in sonst hochkultivierten Ländern gerecht gewürdigt werden. Aus praktischen Gründen nahm sich die Völkerkunde zunächst auch jener exotischen Hochkulturvölker an, mit denen die klassische Geschichtswissenschaft des Abendlandes trotz ihres Anspruchs, Universalgeschichte zu sein, sich nicht näher befaßte: der ost- und südasiatischen Zivilisationsträger also, des Völkerblocks mit arabisch-islamischer Weltanschauung und Sozialordnung und der alten indianischen Reichsschöpfer Mittel- und Südame rikas. Erst die Entstehung eigener archäologischer und folkloristischer Disziplinen wie etwa der Sinologie und Japanologie, der Islamkunde, der Amerikanistik brachte hier der Ethnologie eine gewisse Entlastung und die Möglichkeit, sich auf die noch immer umfangreichen Probleme der natumahen Gesellschaftsformen zu konzentrieren. Die klassische Epoche der modernen Völkerkunde begann im Gefolge der europäischen Vorherrschaft über die Erde gegen Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Sie führte vor allem zur Gründung ethnographischer" Museen, die als Forschungszentren und Bergungsstätten für das im großen Wandel eines neuen Zeitalters rasch dahinschwindende eigene Kulturgut in Afrika und Amerika, Ozeanien und Asien bald unschätzbaren Wert erlangten. Früher beschränkt auf die Länder des Westens, sind völkerkundliche Museen und Institute heute überall in der Welt, oft als Symbole des nationalen Selbstbewußtseins junger Nationen, verbreitet.
