Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Edward Gorey (Dust Jacket and title page illustration) (illustratore). First Edition. 8vo. Pp. 246. Fore-edge untrimmed. Paper covered boards with lettering stamped on spine. A modicum of fading on top edge of text block. Slight discoloration at top of front free endpaper due to erasure of penciled inscription. Dust jacket price-clipped, else Fine. An especially handsome copy of the first edition, 1963, preceding the 1964 British Longman's edition. Over the past 50-plus years Let's Kill Uncle has acquired a sub rosa aura that's culminating in cultish adulation. Fawning tributes have been published, mostly by those who read the book as adolescents and, years later, then explain, usually with erudition, why the novel has stuck in their psyche. The book's attributes are many, including the novel's depiction of two parent-less delinquents outwitting adults, the pitch-perfect depiction of mid-century life in the Gulf Islands (Salt Spring Island is the supposed locale on which the fictional island is based), the Edward Gorey dust jacket that so exquisitely befits the macabre storyline, the author (actual name: June Skinner) who posited a fixture in the demi-canon of underappreciated books that have fervent champions. For a keen investigation of the novel, its author and its magical allure, see A Certain Kind of Murder by Theo Schell-Lambert in Issue 59 of The Believer magazine (Jan. 1, 2009), which is available online. A solid piece of Goreyana. Dust jacket now housed in removable, clear, archival protector. .
