The fortunes of politicians have often been made and unmade by headlines arising from the latest political poll. This timely book, written simply and filled with anecdotes, sums up what every layman and professional in the field must know to interpret the significance of polls, on and off the political season. Increasingly, we have come to rely on polls to tell us what our neighbors think, how they will vote, and what, therefore, constitutes a realistic candidacy or policy. Yet despite this interest in polls, the authors ? both of whom are expert pollsters ? are convinced that most politicians, newspapermen, and voters alike do not know the first thing about the difference between a good poll and a bad one and cannot distinguish between a significant finding and a misleading, worse-than-useless one. The authors speak from experience. Charles W. Roll, Jr., has conducted Governor Nelson Rockefeller's highly effective private polls since 1963, and Albert H. Cantril served as a key member of the White House staff during the Johnson Administration. Because they believe that the public's ability to understand and evaluate polls is crucial to our political system, they have written this uniquely useful book, a lucid, non-technical guide to polling procedures and to their political uses. Proceeding both analytically and anecdotally, Roll and Cantril show how polls may be designed and interpreted to reflect the truth or what the client wants to announce, and they offer a number of startling illustrations of the political use and misuse of polls in recent campaigns. XX Charles W. Roll, Jr., and Albert H. Cantril are co-authors of Hopes and Fears of the American People. Mr. Roll is President of Political Surveys and Analyses, Inc., which has counted among its clients Nelson Rockefeller of New York, Richard Hughes of New Jersey, and Senator Howard Baker of Tennessee. He is also the Study Director of the Gallup Organization, where he has conducted surveys for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Philadelphia Bulletin, and many others. Albert H. Cantril is an independent consultant in political and social research. After receiving his Ph.D. in Political Science from MIT, he joined the White House staff, serving as research aide to Bill D. Moyers. He has been a consultant to the former Bureau of the Budget and to the Division of Behavioral Science of the National Academy of Science. He also served for two years in the Department of State.
