Es entstand eine Serie einfühlsamer Portraits, die viel vom Kindsein und Erwachsenwerden, von meist nur nomineller Chancengleichheit und dem Leben in der amerikanischen Provinz erzählen. Aufsehen erregte Ross in den 80er Jahren mit einer Reihe von Portraitstudien, die sie vor dem Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington aufnahm.
