Prima edizione
2 volumes. 8vo., (9 x 6 inches). With twenty full-page plates after drawings by Howard Simon. Original green cloth, gilt. Provenance: Provenance: with the bookplate of James S. Copley on front paste-down of each volume, his sale, Sotheby's New York "Magnificent American, Historical Documents", 10th May 2011, lot 1059. First edition thus, revised and expanded, first published in 1914. The first documented biography of the famed New Mexican mountain man, trapper, teamster, scout, Indian fighter, and agent. Sabin used primary source material, rather than relying on legend, for the life of this Western icon: "The turning point in Carson's life came on a St. Louis steamboat in 1842. Explorer John C. Frémont hired him as a guide and hunter for his 1842 expedition to the Wind River Mountains in Wyoming. With Fitzpatrick, Carson was also Frémont's guide on his second expedition (1843-1844), to California and Oregon; he again scouted and guided for him on his controversial 1845-1846 California expedition, which ended in filibustering and a court-martial for the so-called Pathfinder. Meanwhile, Kit was becoming famous because Frémont lauded him in his government reports, which became the equivalent of bestsellers, so hungry was the public for information on the West. Unfortunately, they were also the stimulus for a raft of fictional tales, potboiler novels, and dime magazines, which created a rival, mythical Kit Carson to the real article. "While serving with Frémont in the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt, the "first act" of the Mexican War in California, Carson's reputation was indelibly blackened when, out of his unquestioning loyalty to Frémont, he obeyed his distracted commander's (implied) order to take no prisoners and had three noncombatant Californios shot at San Rafael. Sent to Washington with dispatches, he was intercepted in New Mexico by General Stephen W. Kearny, who ordered him to guide his Army of the West to California. Carson did so and, with two others, slipped through enemy lines for reinforcements when Kearny's dragoons were besieged and badly mauled by Don Andrés Pico's lancers at the battle of San Pascual in December 1846. After helping in the conquest of southern California, Carson twice carried dispatches to Washington. There, he found himself hailed as a hero, and President James K. Polk appointed him a lieutenant in the mounted rifles regiment" (Richard H. Dillon for ANB).
