Schellbach.The French Mathematician and physicist Louis Poinsot (1777-1859) was the inventor of geometrical mechanics. Starting his career as a civil engineer, Poinsot developed a true passion for abstract mathematics and left to become a secondary school teacher. He moved up to become inspector general of the Imperial University of France and then as an assistant teacher at the Ecole Polytechnique, publishing several works on geometry and mechanics. Poinsot was elected to fill the place of the late Joseph-Louis Lagrange at the Academie des Sciences in 1813. In 1848, Poinsot was awarded as an Officer of the Legion of Honor, and in 1852 was chosen as a member of the Senate. He was later elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1858.
