Professor Schnapp demonstrates how at the center of Paradise Dante criticizes the secular values of history from the viewpoint of Jerusalem and the Crossa critique inscribed into the poetics of the Comedy as a whole. The author's focus throughout is on Dante's Christianization of Classical epic constructs. How is it, he asks, that the tale of Aeneas' foundation of Rome can be retold as that of the writing of a poem? The answer he suggests lies in the Christian theology of martyrdom and its characteristic conflation of heroic word and heroic act. Beginning with an introduction to the Martial cantos, the book then provides a reconstruction of Dante's "tragic" reading of Book Six of the Aeneid, an analysis of Cacciaguida's representation of Florentine history, and a discussion of the iconography of Dante's Martial cross and its relation to the iconography of Christ's Transfiguration.
