Newer brown cloth spine with black imprinted designs and gilt lettered title on the spine. Three newer end papers inserted on front. Title page has an archival repair on the edges. Paper is browned and brittle. with the repairs this copy is now firmly bound with no loose pages. The original (browned) front end sheet is mounted onto one of the new end sheets. A presentation inscription to E. K. Townsend reads - " This volume is presented to the Hon. E. K. Townsend - as a slight evidence of our appreciation of his noble efforts in attempting to enforce the legal rights of our oppressed colored brethren, against the bloated persistency of Plutocracy, as exemplified in the recent trial of the case of Fulton vs. Swallows. January 1st, 1897. [Signed] G W England - Louis A. Myers - B B Rippert - Y. P. Newman - W C Butts - J. P.Batet.?" Fragments of an old end sheet? with Townsends name on the envelope laid inside the front cover. A couple of newspaper clippings (non related) on the rear paste down. This presentation copy also comes with a modern brown cloth clamshell box with leather labels on the spine.
